New Scranton High School

Favorably bid at nine percent under budget, Scranton High School is a testament to how coordinated effort can result in a cost-effective design without compromising quality. Programmed for 1,800 students, this structure of steel, masonry, and glass is organized along a concourse that leads students to and from the major academic and extracurricular components of the school. This linear arrangement is in response to site conditions and lends itself to a unique order of spaces.

The new school sits on a hill that overlooks the District’s existing Memorial Stadium. The continuous curve of the building gestures toward the stadium and embraces the site. This helps create a large campus atmosphere in a very urban part of the city. The enclosing of space serves as a buffer for the site from the adjacent expressway. Its location at the intersection of three major thoroughfares positions the new high school as a very prominent building at one of the city’s main points of entry.
